The largest of the Ionian islands and probably the least well known! Until recently, when it was catapulted into the headlines as the setting for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", Cephalonia was an almost undiscovered gem!This beautiful island has much to offer the visitor in search of a peaceful and scenic Greek villa holiday; Cephalonia's dramatic scenery is its major asset, from the towering peak of Mount Aenos (an ideal place to escape to on a really sweltering day), to the picture postcard seaside villages of Fiskardo and Assos in the north and Aghia Efimia on the east coast with its lovely harbour looking across at nearby Ithaka, a haven for yachts. Dramatic cliffs plummett to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean, such as Myrtos and Petani - the sea has that unbelievable hue somewhere between cobalt, aquamarine and turquoise. A Cephalonia villa holiday would not be complete without a visit to Argostoli Town, the capital, which was mainly destroyed in the devastating earthquake in the 1940's, so most of the buildings are modern. But the town still offers a bustling main square lined by cafe bars, waterfront tavernas and excellent shops. Although there is not a great deal of organised activity on Cephalonia, villa holidays here are all about the island's main glories - its natural beauty, and there are definitely plenty of things to do and see. The underground lake at Melissani is a must, as are the caves at Drogerato, both near to the port of Sami. There are small boats to rent from Argostoli and Fiskardo. You could also visit the Robolo wineries near to Aghios Gerasimos, the church of the patron saint of the island or perhaps try horse trekking near to Sami..a wonderful way to explore the ancient donkey tracks or even ride on the beach!
